[telepathically] Eugene Allerton: I'm not queer
Narrative
In 1950s Mexico City, an American expatriate in his late forties leads a solitary life in a small American community. However, the arrival of a young student prompts the man to finally form a meaningful relationship with someone.. Daniel Craig was ultimately the one who convinced Luca Guadagnino to cast Drew Starkey after watching Guadagnino's audition tapes and telling him "That's the guy" after seeing Starkey's..
I'm not queerWilliam Lee: I knowEugene Allerton: I'm disembodied
Lee... Features Orpheus (1950). This is one of the most boring and pretentious films I've seen in years.
Daniel Craig plays an anti-hero
Except for the soundtrack, which tries to breathe some life into this otherwise contrived and dated story about an old gay man going through his depressive search for meaning in his life. With its extremely slow pace, pseudo-intellectual dialogues, and caricatured depiction of homosexuals in the 50s, the film seems to want to show how lost homosexuals have been in these years. A drug addict, sexually impotent, he floats in an unreal world, desperately looking for an anchor.
He is sad and pathetic
The film can be seen as a trash version of Luchino Visconti's famous masterpiece Death in Venice. It could have been called Death in Mexico. After the highly regarded Call me by your name, it seems that the director made a mistake in producing a new worthy work.
